Ready to Set New Career Goals? Here’s Where to Start

With the start of a New Year, it’s a great time to step back and reassess your career. If you’re like most people, your workplace situation might be off track from all the chaos of 2020. However, if you’re ready for a change, now’s the time to take action, especially if you’ve been soul-searching and self-evaluating for a while. Here are some tips to follow as you’re considering new goals for 2021:

Think about what you truly want.
Your particular career might have a clear track. However, that doesn’t mean you have to follow it. In fact, if you’ve been disengaged or unhappy in your role or field, now’s the time to start thinking about what you truly want. To figure it out, consider which areas of your job make you happy, the ones you love. Once you have a clear sense of what you want your career to look like in the future, you can set more tangible goals to get there.

Talk to industry veterans.
Whether you want to stay in your field and get promoted, or switch industries entirely, talk to people in-the-know. These are experienced industry veterans who understand the good, the bad, and the ugly about the kinds of positions you’re interested in finding. They can give you the inside scoop about what certain roles or fields are really about, so you can make more informed choices going forward.

Make sure your goals are SMART.
This stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. These are the kinds of goals that are clear-cut and realistically achievable. Your progress working toward them can also be measured against a final completion date. You can even break up goals and put them on 3-, 6-, or 12-month timelines. However, you approach it, creating SMART goals will help you achieve a better outcome overall because they force you to adhere to an action plan.

Consider stretching yourself.
Whether you want to stay where you are or make a move up the ladder, it’s important to attain new knowledge and skills. This will help you to perform your job better and also prepare for future challenges, so you’re able to adjust more easily. To do this, consider a training program, online seminars, a certificate course, or a continuing education class that aligns with the goals you’re trying to achieve.
