Motivate Yourself to Find That Next Job

When you first start looking for a new job, it feels exciting and even invigorating. However, as the weeks go by, it’s easy to lose steam and become discouraged. How can you remain motivated during a sometimes lengthy job search process? Here are some tips to help you.

How Can You Motivate Yourself to Find a New Job?

Apply to the right jobs.

Don’t apply to every job you’re qualified for. Instead, only apply for those that are truly a fit for what you’re looking for in your next career move. This more targeted approach means you’re only applying for jobs that are a good match, which can speed up the process.

Set realistic goals.

Have goals for each week of your job search. For instance, during the first week, you’re focus on writing a strong resume and updating your LinkedIn profile. After that, set goals like “attending one networking event each week” and “applying to 3-5 jobs each week.” This way, you’re constantly working toward a milestone, helping you remain motivated in the process.

Look for inspiration.

Find inspiration from those around you, those in your field, or even those outside of it. Read books about inspiring figures or leaders, or find anything from an online Ted Talk to inspirational quotes to help re-ignite your spark and remain focused on finding a new job.

Stay in the know in your field.

Make sure you’re remaining up to date about the latest developments in your field, from technologies to new legislation and more. This can also help to guide your search and will help you provide more informed and insightful answers during interviews.

Surround yourself with positive people.

There’s nothing more discouraging than a negative person. They can suck the energy out of your job search.

Instead, surround yourself with positive people, at home and in the office. These are the ones who can provide encouragement when you’re having a down day and celebrate the wins with you when things are going well.

Think about all you’re grateful for.

When your job search is slower than expected or you don’t get the offer you want, it’s easy to get discouraged. One way to counter this, though, is by being grateful. Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. At the end of the week, read through all these positives thoughts. This will help you push through those moments of stress and uncertainty in your job search.
