How to Make a Good Impression on Your First Day of the Job

Starting a new job is both exciting and nerve-wracking. After all, it can set the tone for the months and years ahead. How can you make a great first impression and get off on the best foot possible? Here are six tips to remember along the way.

Tip #1: Prepare the night before.

You don’t want to get caught up rushing around on the morning of your first day. Avoid this by preparing the night before, from what you’re going to wear to packing your bag and lunch if you plan to bring it.

Tip #2: Plan to arrive early.

Be a few minutes early, so you’re not hurried. Show up 10-15 minutes before you’re supposed to, so you can get your bearings and make a good impression. If you’re driving or taking public transportation, make sure you have your route mapped out ahead of time.

Tip #3: Be friendly when you meet new co-workers.

You are probably going to meet a lot of new people on your first day. Be friendly, make eye contact, and smile at everyone. You’ll come off as open and affable, making a good first impression in the process. Also, repeat everyone’s first name as you meet them, so you’re more likely to remember it.

Tip #4: Accept invitations

If you’re invited out to lunch or for happy hour, make sure you accept. This will allow you to get to know your co-workers better, on a more personal level, and also for them to get to know you. It can help you foster new relationships and feel more comfortable, faster.

Tip #5: Be clear and ask questions.

Make sure you understand your manager’s expectations and goals for you on the job. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you need some clarity. Bring a notepad and pen with you everywhere during those first few days on the job, so you can make a note of questions and important information.

Tip #6: Keep your phone on silent.

Put your phone away and keep it out of sight on the job – unless you need it for your position. Even when you’re tempted to check in or scroll through email or social media updates, avoid it. Save this for your breaks or lunch.
