5 Ways to Prep for a Video Interview

If you’re interviewing for jobs in Grand Rapids, the process might be a bit different than what you’re used to with phone screens and video interviews. While phone screens have been a part of the hiring equation for a while, video interviews are likely new to you. How can you best prep for one, so you ace it and land the job? Here are some tips to help you:

Do a technical check first.

Before your video interview, the hiring manager will likely send you an invitation from whatever software they use. Do a trial run and click on the link before your meeting to make sure it works, and you don’t have any technical difficulties. Also, check the sound and visual quality to ensure you come off as professional as possible.

Fully charge your device ahead of time.

Realizing your battery is down to its last 10% is stressful right before an interview. Don’t let that happen to you. Instead, make sure your phone, tablet, or laptop is fully charged and at 100% with a nearby charger.

Create a private, professional space.

Your interview should take place in a place that’s quiet and looks professional. This can be a home office, your family room, or kitchen. Just make sure you’re alone, so the interviewer doesn’t hear your family talking in the background or dogs barking.

Dress for an interview.

Even though this experience is entirely virtual, it’s still important to dress the part. This means an interview suit that’s in a neutral color. Make sure you avoid anything with plaids or stripes, which can appear distorted on the screen.

Be mindful of your body language.

Just because you’re not in the interviewer’s office doesn’t mean they’re not assessing your body language. Make sure you sit up straight, don’t fidget, and try to convey confidence, enthusiasm, and professionalism with your body language.

A virtual interview can undoubtedly feel different than one that happens in an office. But it’s just as important for you to prepare ahead of time and follow the practices above to ensure the experience goes as smoothly as possible.
